Self-storage for businesses and online shops

A growing business often needs more space before it needs a bigger office or warehouse. Self-storage lets you add space quickly and scale back just as easily. This guide shows how businesses and online shops use it.

In short

  • Self-storage is flexible extra space for stock, equipment and archives, without a long lease.
  • It suits online shops, tradespeople, event companies and small businesses.
  • Use shelving and clear labelling to make the most of the height of the unit.
  • Insurance is mandatory, and you can give team members access.

Why do businesses use self-storage?

  • Flexibility: add or release space as demand changes.
  • A smaller commitment than a warehouse lease.
  • Security: a private unit in an access-controlled, monitored building.
  • Predictable costs: monthly rent and insurance.

What can a business store?

  • Stock and seasonal inventory
  • Equipment and tools
  • Archives and documents
  • Event and trade-show material
  • Furniture and office supplies during a move or refit

How do online shops use self-storage?

Online shops often start from a spare room or a garage. As orders grow, a unit becomes a flexible stock room:

  • Keep your products organised in one place.
  • Handle seasonal peaks such as Black Friday or Christmas.
  • Store returns and packaging materials.
  • Add space as you grow, and release it when you don't need it.

Check the terms and conditions for the activities that are allowed in a unit.

Self-storage for tradespeople, events and shops

  • Tradespeople: tools, materials and equipment, close to your jobs.
  • Event companies: staging, signage and decoration between events.
  • Pop-up and market sellers: stock and display material.
  • Professionals: archives, documents and office furniture.

Self-storage or warehouse: which is better?

  • Self-storage: small to medium volumes, short contracts, quick to start.
  • Warehouse: large volumes, longer leases, often with extra services.

For small or temporary needs, self-storage is often the more flexible choice. For large, stable volumes, a warehouse may make more sense.

How do you organise a business unit?

  1. Install shelving to use the full height of the unit.
  2. Group products by category and label every box.
  3. Keep fast-moving items near the door.
  4. Leave an aisle so you can reach everything.
  5. Keep an up-to-date inventory list.

How big a unit does a business need?

Many small businesses and online shops start small, around 4–10 m², and move up as they grow. Larger stock or equipment needs more than 13 m². Start from the number of boxes, pallets and large items you need to store.

Insurance and access for business stock

Insurance is mandatory when you rent a Storo unit. Coverage options and prices for Portugal will be announced before opening. You can give colleagues or couriers access via the customer portal.

How to budget for business storage

Your monthly cost is the rent for the unit plus insurance. Compare it with the cost of the alternative, such as a warehouse lease or a larger office, and remember that you can scale the space up or down as your business changes.

Frequently asked questions

Can I run my business from a storage unit?

Units are designed for storing goods. Check the terms and conditions for what is allowed, or ask our team.

Can my team or a courier access the unit?

Yes. You can give another person access via your customer portal, with an optional end date. They receive an invitation by email and see the shared unit in their own app.

Is self-storage cheaper than a warehouse?

For small or temporary needs it is often cheaper and more flexible, because you only pay for the space you use and don't sign a long lease. For large volumes a warehouse may make more sense.

How big a unit does an online shop need?

It depends on your stock. Count your boxes and any pallets or large items, then compare with our size guide. Many small shops start with a small unit and move up as they grow.
